The locket as a holder of keepsakes portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. along with the volume created by negative space between the hoops

Minor evidence of a past partial reshank with subtle solder seams and a duplicate of stamping inside

The centre stone was more than likely a later replacement
